Yeah I hate to break it to the world, but a lot of MDs I know have a private practice, work in the hospital only when they need to perform procedures, do enough continuing education to maintain their license or stay current in their narrow sphere of medical science, and almost never get involved with research.
In short, most doctors aren't actual scientists. Many choose to be educated on science in fields outside their main practice, but they will still never be experts. Those that have a preconception on certain topics can be willfully ignorant to the science and still be highly successful at what they do.
It sucks, but that's the way some people are.
