If McDavid doesn't drive to the net, he doesn't run into Markstrom. Period.
Therefore it is not 100% on Tanev.
Think about this from the perspective of a different player - imagine that it is Matthews charging the net like that. If the player does that, they are responsible for the consequences. The other team is not going to simply let them go unimpeded.
And there are going to be consequences. If I were an Oiler fan, I would be very worried about McDavid doing that. You can blame the other player, and call it tripping, all you want. That won't help him much, the next time he gets injured.
