It's a lose/lose situation basically in a lot of ways.
It's a flat out reckless play by McDavid to drive towards the goalie as fast as possible and expect not to be touched. At that speed even a small amount of contact could send him crashing dangerously into the goalie, net, or boards.

Ideally he doesn't get tripped in either play, but to me it's a dangerous play by McDavid and should draw some goalie interference calls like in this clip. At the same time, he's going to get tripped by defencemen too as they attempt to defend such a difficult play, but the resulting collision is almost always going to be dangerous.
