But honestly if I'm a ref I would hate calling that a trip. Really there is nothing the defender can do there.
If McDavid decides to change his path to try to cut to the middle, then he's likely going to make contact with a stick or leg there. That's not a player reaching out into the lane the playing was going in and tripping him, that's McDavid cutting into the defender and making contact.
Honestly I have no issue with refs not calling penalties in situations like that where the offensive player initiates the incidental contact.
And really I'm not sure what McDavid is always whining about. He seems to think that he has some sort of exemption that defenders are supposed to let him just walk right into the front of the net.
He continues to want to drive wide and then cut hard to try to get to the front of the net with some expectation that the defender should just give up and let him have that lane. Which just isn't going to happen, he's going to get hacked, hit, and tripped.
Honestly I would be shocked if he doesn't have another injury in his career that's a result of him flying into the post or crossbar, he puts himself into that situation multiple times a game, and at the speed he is going at it's not hard to get hurt.
