You can't make a player sign a long term contract. The only alternative was for Trev to let him hold out. I'm not sure how fans would have liked that coming off a great year, especially when teams in a cap world generally have a window of being competitive.
I doubt it becomes a league wide problem. Most players would rather have the 7-8 year contract with guaranteed big money. Not many want to gamble like the Tkachuks were obvioulyl prepared to do.
