How about "the preseason is entirely, 100% about process, and the results are therefore 100% meaningless, the only thing to be optimistic or pessimistic about is the performance of individual players, their chemistry with one another or their apparent ability to play the system that's going to be in place this year"?

That's literally the only thing that matters here. Arguably the best scenario for most pre-season games in terms of usefulness is to ice a lineup that's outmatched and see how they do playing against NHL-caliber players so you have some sense of what they might be like when the games count... in other words, the best case scenario involves probably losing every game.
