This would be explained by the fact that I think you'd get far more value today than at the trade deadline, which is where Treliving is taking us. Gaudreau has no incentive to sign, so we'll be humming and hawing at the deadline, be borderline in playoff spot, and Treliving will have to trade him to maximize value. So the trade we get in Feb is going to be not good to what we could get now and since that is most probably the outcome, we should take action now (er, probably in June but whatever).
Treliving needs to eventually make a stand somewhere, better sooner than later, basically.

It makes absolutely zero sense to do that right now. If Treliving wanted to trade him it would have had to be during the summer.
Not sure the best way to create sustainable success is to negotiate with tactic “sign this contract or get traded”
