It sounds stupidly simple, but honestly when it comes to putting just go to a putting green and putt, putt, putt, to the point where you just know where your ball will go every time, with speed and undulation being the only difference when you're on a new course (but your feel and repetition allow you to figure it out really quick).
Just know what happens when that ball leaves your putter with any given strength and then play by feel. Maybe it's bad advice, I don't know, but it's served me so much better than rules and tricks and all that. I don't even think about how many inches past or anything, I just see the hole and know what it takes to get near it and go.
Where most guys go for a certain distance past, sometime I come up short and just go "**** me I should have hit that harder" and then tap in for par or bogey or whatever and move on.
