Tanev better than Brodie? I don't think I agree, I'd argue they're comparable from an impact perspective but deliver different styles of play. For a team as offensively starved and desperately in need of a puck moving defenceman? Brodie would be great to have.
Tanev also seemingly had his best NHL season in year 1 of his UFA deal and it was a massive, massive turn of events for him based on the years leading up to that free agent deal. Just assuming Tanev is going to be as good as he was last year and as healthy as he was last year is a risk.

Brodie had one goal last year playing for a high scoring team
Tanev had two and is 10x better defensively. I would trade Brodie for Tanev any day.
