It happened last year with Kucherov, but just because his own timeline for rehab happened to coincide with the end of the season/start of the playoffs, that does not mean that teams can simply set a date on their own that is most convenient for them. We already know how long Eichel's rehab will take with the disc-replacement surgery—I believe it is two or three months. A team could theoretically make a trade for him in mid-to-late January, and then effectively do this. But what a team cannot do is opt for a player to have surgery, and then set their own timeline for his return.
