Watching Young Wallander, as someone who has read most of the novels, I'm enjoying the way in which the story is applying the social themes from the novels into a contemporary setting, but it's definitely missing some of the charm of the books, from the world-weary detective to the procedural, running-of-a-complex-investigation level of detail that the books have. Also setting it in a city makes sense and gives it a more intense mood, but the coastal countryside is again such an important part of the source material. I'm not sure if I'd like it more or less if I wasn't familiar with the books.
