I think people read too much into these comments. Sure the goal is to win the cup, but the immediate goal is to make the playoffs.

Every team is going to say that going into the season. Especially for a team that isn't rebuilding and want to be in the playoffs.

People underestimate how tight the NHL is too. Look at the Western Conference over the last three seasons:

1) Colorado - .635
2) Vegas - .624
3) St.Louis - .612
4) Nashville - .585
5) Calgary - .579
6) Winnipeg - .579
7) Dallas - .568
8) Minnesota - .568
9) Edmonton - .560
10) Arizona - .514

You have Colorado and Vegas...and then what's a pretty big group of teams in the middle. With the way people talked on here you'd think the Flames were one of the worst teams in the conference, but really we are in that tight grouping between 3rd and 9th.
