The main goal should be to build a legit sustainable contender that is good enough to battle for 1st overall. For those teams making the playoffs is a given, and winning a Stanley Cup is a much more likely occurrence.
When you're not good enough to be a contender then making the playoffs becomes the goal, and winning a Stanley Cup is almost nil.

You need to make the playoffs before you win the Stanley cup.
Ask Darryl Sutter at game 70 his first season in LA if he was thinking about the Stanley Cup or if he was worried about the last 12 games.
