Treliving is probably thinking $8 million… but I bet that’s a non-starter for Gaudreau’s camp. Even if he has a down year, I think he could get $8 million on the open market because most GMs would assume it was because of Sutter’s defence-first system and lack of other top tier talent. So in that case, Gaudreau has little motivation to sign an $8 million deal right now.

I think the bottom line is the flames will have to overpay to keep him… and I’m honestly ok with that. He is a great player and is easily the finest player to watch on the team. I think he has it in him to be a big part of a championship team and I hope it’s with the flames.

What team that’s close to a championship can pay $9M for Gaudreau? Other teams have the same cap issues as Calgary, or worse.
