It was always going to take shedding one of Gaudreau/Monahan/Tkachuk, and probably one of Dube/Valimaki to make the cap work in an Eichel trade.
They could still make it work with a combination of one of the big forwards, and one of the promising young guys moving.
For better or worse this is Darryl Sutter hockey.

I think the Eichel dream is dead. I also think Darryl likes it that way, he prefers being the underdog and being a workmanlike team. Having Eichel just doesn't seem to fit with him.
Having said that, if Tre were still pursuing Eichel, I think Monahan, Mangiapane and Valimaki are the pieces that would have to move out. Monahan to some other team for picks/prospects. Mangiapane and Valimaki plus picks/prospect for Eichel.
I think Mangiapane has to be the one to go out. He arguably has the highest value and he also needs a new contract next year. I don't think the Flames will be able to keep him next year plus give new contracts to Gaudreau and Tkachuk. I think Dube's new 3 year deal at a reasonable value will keep him here over Mangiapane.
