I agree with you, but the Flames management has shown an affinity for that warm, safe feeling that comes with the knowledge that they deploy players having a working knowledge of what it takes to succeed at the highest level. Unfortunately, that working knowledge doesn't always align with an actual ability to put that knowledge to use.
The best thing about signings like this one, and more specifically Stone, is that they don't force the team to throw a player like Mackey into a situation that may stunt his career. In a limited view last year, I thought he showed more highs than lows, but I would trust that Sutter knows far more about his current functionality then some fan like me. At the least, if the Flames are in contention at the deadline, this signing should (hope, hope) prevent the annual picks for pounds strategy they tend to favor.....
