Batherson got this contract because he got played on a bad team's powerplay because they lacked anyone else to play in that spot. A bright spot for Batherson is his shooting % though as he shot at 15.3% last season, which isn't "crazy" as you can look at his career average of 14.3% over his 99 games played as perhaps reason to believe he may be a pretty good finisher - and being able to finish plays is definitely an important skillset.
I think this is all kinds of bad for Ottawa, but the main point of my post is to illustrate that Mangiapane (especially considering RFA/UFA status) is worth more than this (if this does in fact reflect the market).
