When the tank fills with water the head gasket which is a 10$ rubber part in the unit head is worn out. You can order it online and replace in about 5 minutes.

Call the MFG and they will give you the part# and diagnose and walk you through it so you don't end up paying $150 for a site visit and overcharge and even suggestion of replacement.

There should be no brine in the tank. Also, the soft level can be controlled. Not familiar with your unit, but city of calgary should be around 21 level.
