Johnny has a year left on his contract. That should really not be surprising
Also Eichel has an absolute boatload of uncertainty due to requiring neck surgery. So the valuation and risk management comes in to play. Depending on the outcome, one of the teams involved could look very foolish and hurt themselves long term
If you value Eichel assuming he is going to be fully healthy, then expend significant assets to acquire him, and things go south, you have torpedoed your franchise
If you value him assuming he is at significant risk of not coming back, and Buffalo takes that return, then he turns out to recover, then they are holding the bag
