It isn't.
It just isn't going down.
Again, the Sabres are the ones with all the leverage at this point...they dont
have to trade him, because there is no return that makes a difference at this point for this season.
Its all futures based (sans one asset to make salary work) from all reports. Well a 1st rd pick now is worth no more than a 1st rd pick 8 months from now, and in fact, could be worth less depending on order of finish by the acquiring club.
Additionally they get to watch potential young players who would be included in possible deals for a season to make better determinations on them.
This is very much like the Duchene situation in Colorado in that the team isnt going to deal him until their ask is met.
Only time will tell if the strategy works or not.
