Not as much leverage as Laine and Tkachuk, since Kotkaniemi would probably get nowhere near $6million on the open market.
Also, to me it seems like Kotkaniemi and the Canes have already worked out the framework for a multi-year deal and this loaded first year was just to get him out of Montreal.
If Kotkaniemi were to have a breakout season in Carolina, in which he becomes worth $6m then that's a great problem for the Canes to have.
