I can’t verify this, because it really not my area of expertise, but I had a conversation with a friend of mine who knows about golf course design and architecture. He was saying that the point of the tee boxes isn’t really for handicaps, but for the second shot into the green on a par 4. He said that the way it’s thought out is that if you have one big hitter and one average hitter, that they’d both hit the 8 iron into the green if they’re playing the correct tee box. There are a couple factors here, obviously. But the point isn’t that everyone’s landing in the same spot, it’s that they’re using the same iron in.
I don’t know if that’s accurate, but it makes a lot of sense to me.
