If it works out for Sam Bennett in Florida, I am happy for him. I had high hopes for him here, him being our highest ever draft pick.
Off topic: Speaking of which, he is now playing on a team with a #1 overall draft pick, a couple of #2 overall draft picks, #3 overall, and of course he's a #4 overall - a couple of those were traded for - if you add Spencer Knight to that list (13 overall)... they can put that out on the ice for a shift, pretty impressive.
My point: What's wrong with us, we've had many years (in a row) where we didn't make the playoffs, where we were a bubble team (which is the problem) and a few years where we barely made it in and one year where we were first - and for our highest draft picks to be Sam Bennett at #4; Monahan, Tkachuk, Tkaczuk, Stillman, O'Brien, and Fata at #6; Phaneuf and Krahn at #9 ... I think there is a problem, especially when you look up north of us and they've had FOUR #1 overall picks and a #3, #4, #7, #8, #10 in the last 12 years and our making the playoffs and winning in the playoffs is not much better than theirs I hate to say... in our history as a team in Calgary, we've never had a top 3 pick... I think the draft lottery is broken and I think the fixes they've tried to make only gave Edmonton more #1 picks (not less)... and if we ever finish last in the league, we're not guaranteed our #1 anymore.... I think a far better method is to exempt teams from the #1 pick that had it in the past 5 years and maybe suppress their odds over the next 5 years as well. Teams winning the draft lottery should also be given the option to decline it - who would, but they can then choose not to be exempt from winning a future one, it's their choice - just a thought.
