Ryan cleared waivers because of his high cap hit relative to his role, not because he wouldn't add value to another team's bottom 6. I wouldn't consider the fact that he cleared waivers as an indication he isn't a useful player. In fact I think he's a very useful player, especially at this lower cap hit this next season.
I think the Oilers are much better and deeper at forward this year. But I think they are also considerably worse on D, and carry a very high risk in goal. Overall I don't really think they will be any better than what they were last year, and I could easily see them taking a step backward. Here's hoping anyway!
On topic - I'm a little surprised at how quiet things are around the Eichel situation. Seems like that's a big stalemate at the moment on all sides.
