He is not a low upside player. He has all the tools to be a very impactful player, he just hasn't put it all together yet.

But he is only 26, and LOTS of defensemen don't put it all together until that age or later. This is actually an excellent gamble on the part of the Flames. IF he does put it together, they just found an impactful, top 4 defenseman for a 3rd round pick. If he doesn't, they recoup their 3rd at the deadline.

They needed a body after losing Giordano. The worst case scenario here is that he is a one-year filler. The upside is pretty significant.
