It works by creating different zones in your cornea for seeing at different distances. So basically your eye recieves near and distance focus at the same time. As you can imagine this would reduce clarity a bit, especially @ night time when the oncoming headlights refract differently in different zones of the cornea.
If you really wanted to see what it would be like, get fitted for Presbyopia/Multi-focal contact lenses first. Its a reasonable approximation.
Another option is monovision. Laser one eye for distance and one eye for near.
Or... Just get Progressive Glasses and stop having to remove them @ near.
