There are certainly some sites doing their own work as the NHL doesn't provide it all. Zone entries, passing danger level work etc has completely been done independently. Most of those sites are membership now.
The raw counting data is NHL for shot attempts for sure, but why is that flawed? And how are you sure it's not validated? I think (think not know) that I read somewhere that each event is counted numerous times to make sure the numbers match.
I think we'll see a move in data towards better models and better assumptions, but the work to date certainly isn't "spun" or "flawed" it's a starting point that will only get better, but makes sense in it's own right.
A shot from closer to the net and in front is certainly more dangerous.
That same shot on a rebound, pass or deflection is certainly more dangerous than just taking the shot itself.
Not all that flawed at all.
