If I am being 100% honest, if I was an NHL player, I would target playing in warmer cities. After that though, huge cities are just not my cup of tea. I live in the GVRD right now, and it's even a little too big for my liking.

I am obviously not Jack Eichel who grew up within the gravity of a massive city like Boston and may be into that, but for me personally, if I had to play north of the Dixon line, I would prefer Calgary over New York. Swear to Batu the goat god, living is such a large city without at least the benefit of a warm climate would drive me bonkers.
All anecdotal obviously, but a lot of Americans that I met when I lived in the US would never dream of moving to NYC or California. Florida also is the butt end of most jokes in the US, especially from Northeasterners. A lot of my American friends living in the deep south or the east coast dreamed about escaping the humidity, being close to the mountains and being close to nature. Most had plans to move to Idaho, Montana, Utah or Colorado at some point in their life. When I would tell them I'm from Calgary, the ones that knew where that was would talk poetically for 20 minutes about the rocky mountains, the snow and the "nice people".

Anyways, obviously I wasn't interacting with 25 year old nhl players, but the point is, lots of Americans would have no issue with living in Western Canada. Just because a lot of Canadians dream about living beside the beach or in NYC, it doesn't mean that it's also the most popular lifestyle choice for Americans.
