We have brickseek down here and it is often pretty unreliable as well. Though normally you wont see a discrepancy as large as 8. I see stories on reddit all the time about having to ask store employees to go look. Sometimes trying with multiple employees to find one that actually puts the effort in is what it takes. It's all a huge YMMV scenario.

I have enough walmarts around that when the sales started I found who had good discounts on the larger sets and then went there first. I wouldn't worry too much about stock numbers just to see selection. Pretty much anytime I get teased by a huge discount having limited stock, it turns out to be false.
