I'm confused about all this. Didn't we witness this Rick and Morty leave a timeline and enter another one in S1 E6? And later we saw that Beth was still alive but now more savage? Why would this timeline suddenly matter when Rick seemingly chose it at random back then.

Yeah, I was thinking this exact same thing last night after I posted. There's a massive plot hole here. Rick abandoned C-137, including both that version of Bird Person and Beth when he Cronenberged Earth in the first season. Then in this new episode he states that this particular version of Bird Person is important to him.

I was thinking maybe the Cronenberg Rick was a different version of Rick, but then we see the Cronenberg world again. Also, Rick has yet to run into any good Ricks' he likes, so the idea of us watching a bunch of different Rick's might not be correct.

Maybe it's just as simple as now Rick is going to start caring for the version of Bird Person he is currently with, instead of finding new ones, as he realizes each one has value.
