The reason some have been objecting to the usage of the term in this thread is precisely because of its connotation—superficially labelling someone or a segment of people as "gold-diggers" on the basis of their sex, appearance and social standing is no different at all than saying they "want to get at another's money." It's not just the term, it is the myopic application of a label like this to beautiful women who have married wealthy men. It's so weird that you seem to think your interpretation of the term somehow makes it any less offensive.
