Compare that with Trouba who even with Flames homer glasses on was a much better d-man after his ELC got paid 3 x 2 and 5.5 = 11.5 for his first 3 RFA years and then got traded for Pionk and a 1st round pick.
Hanifin is up 3.5 M on what Trouba got and there is no one thinking he is an 8M x 8 D-man
Lindholm turned out as great contract. He did however come in after 5 years in the league and was not a clear top-6 center or player. He was behind Aho and Staal in Carolina and even within the margin or error with Ryan and Victor Rask.
He was a major disappointment after being picked ahead of Monahan. There was absolutely no talk or hope or realistic plan for him to challenge Monahan for #1C. Relative to Monahan Averaging 30 goals / 60 pts for the previous 4 years and had 5 years left at 6.375 giving Lindholm 5+ M would have been absurd.

Except that Hanafin and Lindholm taking big steps forward would have not been a big surprise.
Trev paid them based on his belief that would happen, and the Flames have been rewarded ever since.
