I would agree, they not interchangeable at the moment.
I would assume it’s up to who the Sabres prefer. There’s reason to be excited about both and it would depend on who they think has the higher upside and fits the profile they would target. Mangiapane is the better player, right now. But is he a lock to be so in 2-3 years when Buffalo is hitting their stride (they hope)?
I think most Flames fans love Mangiapane because he was a 6th round pick and essentially found money. He has established himself as a top 6 LW but his contract situation is a little more difficult to manage, I would think. Mang is also two years older and closer to his ‘payday’ contract.
I think either are plausible, and I would part with either to get Eichel.
