As some one had mentioned as well whats from stopping Buffalo from flipping him for further assets down the road at a trade deadline? A fresh start even on a bad team could be a good thing for a soon to be UFA and he’d be anchoring a top line spot again with their best young players flanking him as opposed to being surpassed by players in Calgary and playing down the lineup. One could argue that a bigger role on a lesser team might be better for him when getting a UFA deal and honestly no matter what way you slice it Monahan is a top 6 Center and will command a sizeable contract come UFA if he goes to the market as we always see on July 1st with players.
Hall also decided to take less on this UFA, he could have got much more had he not stayed with Boston and I don’t really think that’s debatable.
