True. But it hurts the return that the flames are getting with eichel because they don’t get him for this season when their cap is in the best position. Gaudreau, tkachuk, and mangiapane are all getting raises next year. At which point, players/salary will have to be shed. So whether it’s tkachuk, mangiapane, backlund, lucic, etc. that is lost next offseason, the team will likely not have as much depth in 2022-2023 when eichel is ready.
This season the team will have the flexibility to have eichel and likely only have to give up Monahan and maybe Dube/Valimaki to make the salary work. Hopefully if the flames trade for eichel, they can still be competitive until he joins the team and then they can be loaded for a playoff run.
