Treliving has likely accepted that if you are going to sign him, it will likely be for 8 years and will likely include some kind of NMC/NTC. So once you have those things in place, it’s finding comparable numbers around the league.
I think the final number is $8 million. Gaudreau’s camp might be asking for $9 million while the flames are likely offering $7 million.
Obviously I’m over-simplifying it. It’s a complicated process that every team/player goes through. Just frustrating that if both the team and the player want to get this done, it should be easier to get it done.

You have to understand there is still negotiating going on. If Brad goes “oh lets just get this done”, they can sense urgency (weakness) and sets the bar super high. Now what are you going to do? Pay their price? Its a cat and mouse game and eventually both sides will bend as they face other pressures (season about to start, etc). It is “part of the process”.
