They could absolutely flip Monahan, but I doubt he'd waive his NTC to go to Buffalo so any time spent in Buffalo would likely be a paper transaction.
Have to think that if Calgary is going to acquire Eichel, it's going to be based around futures. Picks and prospects are going to be the key pieces, and perhaps someone like Monahan from a flipping perspective for more picks and/or prospects.

That is a good point. Could be difficult to find a third trade partner that could take on Monahan’s cap hit right now. Monahan might agree to waive his NTC if Buffalo was only used to retain some of his salary before going somewhere else. He could return a top prospect or a top-ten protected 1st if buffalo retained 50% of his cap hit.
