I think the city played a huge role in getting Coleman to sign but that is part of the problem. Calgary is a great place for families so players with kids seem to be very willing to sign here. Great city to live in, safe, clean, friendly but for 20 something millionaires I can see why many other cities are more attractive.
Small city, fishbowl market, freezing cold winter, brutal travel are reasons this is not a city hockey players want to be.
I will say I do think Calgary is a tier above Edmonton, Winnipeg when it comes to UFA destinations

Winters in most of the NE US are just as bad or worse.
Yes calgary isn't Boston or NYC, but if climate is a major concern, Calgary is much better than Minneapolis, Chicago, Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, Philly, etc.
I lived in DC for 2 years and would take a Calgary winter any day over winter there. I don't think you can fully appreciate how crappy the combination of gloomy skies, high wind, humidity and cold can be for 4 months of the year. It's downright miserable.
