Let's look at past anchor contracts and when they fell off:

Raymond - 29 (signed at 29)
Brouwer - 30 (signed at 31)
Neal - 31 (signed at 31)
Lucic - 29 (signed at 28)
Stajan - 32 (signed at 30)
Frolik - 31 (digned at 27)

Let's say Coleman bucks the trend and is effective to 32. That's another 3 years of term you need to buyout.

Signing a UFA who turns 30 this year isn't just risky, it's bound to backfire unless you can halve the term to 3 years.
I hear you but i think you can get some comfort that Coleman has played 350 NHL games including playoffs which isn't a lot compared to other 2011 draft picks (nuge, landeskog, etc) that are over 600 games before including playoffs. I remember this was some of the thinking when Gio was signed to that long contract.
