I wonder how often offer sheets are used as leverage in negotiations without even being signed. Example:
GM: “I’m going to match any offer sheet he signs so he’ll end up playing here no matter what. All that will do is put more pressure on him from his teammates, from the fans, and from the media. Let’s just keep negotiating and get to the right number.”
Agent: “We’ve found the right number already. It’s $10 million per year for five years. We have an offer sheet on the table that says so. You can give us that right now and no one needs to know about any offer sheet. We can call the negotiations complete and it won’t look like you were strong-armed into the deal.”
