I can see that if someone weren't sure, but not if they've made up their mind.
If he's already decided he wants to stay, likes the team, likes the fit, etc. then there is really no reason to wait the year.
If he believes in the team today and wants to stay, he's not waiting a year (where he might be traded) to confirm that feeling.
