With the news that Power would be out long term, the Stamps reached out and signed McCarty, the longtime Edmonton Elks running back who had retired earlier this season.

“I talked to him first, I wanted to make sure he wants to play,” Dickenson said. “He definitely wanted to play, he just didn’t have an offer he felt was a legit offer. He wants to play and wants to be part of a football team that has a chance to do some good things. I always respected the way he played. He as strong mentally but also physically. He’s always been a thorn in our side.”

The Stampeders are hoping to get Ucambre Williams practising again soon, but there is no firm timeline on that.

Williams has missed almost all of training camp. He’s a veteran, so that’s manageable, but is also being moved to left tackle, so getting reps in matters. For a team that’s got an extremely new-look offensive line, getting some continuity going is important, too.

As for Mitchell, he missed all of Monday’s practice. The Stampeders would like to get their star quarterback some more work in the final week of camp, but it’s understood that he’s experiencing some soreness and they won’t rush him back.

“I’d like to think we could ramp it up a little before the end of camp, but if his body is not telling him that it feels like he should, then we listen,” Dickenson said. “We have used this as an opportunity to look at the other guys, but we missed him out there today.”
