From my experience, Asian parents that fit your description have their own pecking order. A pretty white blonde girl like her wouldn't have made them as upset as say, a black girl. She's probably #2 on the list of ideals for his parents. Modern media has seen to that.
My guess? I'm actually going to say the opposite of the above. She went back with him to Vietnam, his family totally accepted her, and he totally saw a future with her. However, being 18, she decides that he's not the guy for her and breaks it off - he's crushed, especially after introducing her to all his family. Then she posts on facebook how wonderful this new guy is and he loses it, and commits the crime.
