That is what they are for that's why when you had Gillis/Rittich in the minors they got to fight it out so they could grab a spot.
Let's look at the Flames goalies in the minors then:
- Tyler Parsons - 23 y.o - played one game last year, before that he had a SV% less than .900 playing for the heat.
- Artyom Zagidulin - 25 y.o - .911SV% in the AHL, .817SV% in the one game he played in the NHL last year.
- Dustin Wolf - 20 y.o - .895SV% in 3 games for the heat. .940SV% in the WHL last year.
Parsons is injured, and hasn't proven he can cut it at the AHL level. Wolf is still a bit too young to make the jump straight to the NHL. As for Zagidulin, he is doing okay in the AHL, but nothing to write home about. For comparison Rittich had a .924SV% in the AHL when he was called up for his first game. Long story short, the prospects haven't showed anything at the lower levels to give the the opportunity on hockey's biggest stage.
EDIT: Gillis got his opportunity with a SV% of .920 in the AHL. Ortio had a .926...
