Treliving had a choice of protecting seven forwards, three defencemen and one goalie, or eight skaters total. Protecting Giordano would have meant leaving one of Hanifin, Andersson or Tanev exposed instead, or leaving
three additional forwards unprotected. It was never going to be a choice between Giordano and Backlund, it would have been Backlund + two other forwards up for grabs. If they left (e.g.) Backlund, Dube and Mangiapane exposed do you still think they would have taken someone like Kylington or Phillips instead?
