But they are not in 'mortgage the future and do anything you can to win NOW' mode, like the Oilers are.

McDavid isn't happy and wants results. They have 4 more years of him and Draisaitl. They have arguably the best one-two punch in the NHL. And they have done NOTHING with it. They HAVE TO find ways improve the team and
push towards being a contender. Immediately.

So, for them, signing 8 year deals to keep cap hits down, makes total sense.

Re Lucic: yes, he was a better player at 28 than Hyman is/was. However, he is also one of the heaviest players in the NHL, and it surprised no one when he slowed down at a pretty young age.

Hyman is nothing like that. Maybe his game deteriorates in a couple years, but I would bet that it doesn't. If the Oilers get 4 good years out of him, this will have been a great signing for them.

If the Oilers are mortgaging the future then put pieces like Holloway, Broberg, 1st rounders etc for players who can help with good cap hits. I guess my problem is I don’t view Hyman as a $5M player on a short or long term deal. I would say he is a 4.5M player for 3-4 years. That is my opinion I know others view him far more highly but to me this is a role player being grossly overpaid in both dollars and term
