At some point though we have to look at how many 2nd/3rd's we've wasted for "depth" and "role" guys and start to question the logic. I mean how many of these guys weve wasted picks put any impact on the Flames hopes/chances of playoff runs etc.
In almost all cases the pick would have been better off in our pocket. Yea you can run the math and say less than 10% of 3rd rounders ever play in the NHL but I'd certainly like keep that dart and throw it at the board for 10% chance at a homerun.
Teams that value these picks have more success and development from within, why waste that on a guy who wont be here long term. I'd certainly prefer keeping the pick and giving the opportunity to a young guy like Pelltier/Gawdin/Ruzicka or even Zary myself.
We then get the cap space + development time and can use that money elsewhere to shore up top 6 scoring or a defenseman for the top 4. Flames need star power and scoring more than we need another 4th line 'energy' guy.
If the pick is a 4th or 5th sure, but I can almost guarantee its EDM's 3rd.
