Come on Jay. I get that you are annoyed with a lot of the negativity here, but some of it is warranted.

If you were to tell me 2 seasons back that the Flames were going to lose both Giordano and Brodie with no assets returned, I wouldn't have believed you. That is disappointing.

Treliving also didn't need some mind-control to re-sign Brodie. Brodie called Treliving, but Treliving kept Brodie waiting while he was busy signings other players. What is Brodie going to do? Wait until he doesn't have a seat either? Treliving could have had one of the AGMs negotiating as well. I think that's a fair criticism.

As for Giordano being selected this time around - rock and a hard place. However, it is disappointing that Giordano was picked for free, when the drop-off from Gio to the next unprotected player is quite huge. I'm no GM, but it is disappointing that nothing ended up getting done where Giordano was concerned. I would rather lose him for a B prospect somewhere in the east than to give Seattle that ammunition - something comparable to the next insignificant piece that Seattle would have taken from Calgary.

I am not happy with the recent asset management in Calgary, or the direction. There is no need to go overboard and blame Treliving for rumours - that I get. But to lose the Flames' top 2 defencmen for nothing in 2 consecutive years is poor asset management, and this team is seemingly trending down.

I am really curious what this off-season brings. I am optimistic that Treliving can do something positive here and turn this team around - or at least I am trying to be. I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about Treliving's decisions this off-season, however. I am much less optimistic than I normally am.

Like I said, I think you are bang on in your defence of Treliving for stuff that is being thrown around in the much of rumours, but there are legitimate reasons to criticize Treliving for, and in my opinion, losing both Giordano and Brodie for nothing is a setback to this organization, regardless of the reasons. Treliving had time to plan for both events. Brodie's contract didn't just end unexpectedly, and this expansion draft just didn't happen out of the blue. There was time to make plans (and backup plans!).

This is nowhere near a Stanley Cup contender that expects to lose some top players. This is a team that didn't make the playoffs this season, hasn't made the playoffs consistently under Treliving, and has 3 playoff game wins in the last 6 seasons. I think some criticism here is more than valid, especially after this team just lost its' captain, which make this a consecutive year in which they lost a top pairing defencemen for nothing.

The rumours resulting in demands to fire Treliving? Not warranted. Valid criticism? Absolutely Treliving is deserving of a lot of criticism right now.
