Sorry I'm not buying it. Teams who are contending load up for playoffs and worry about things like this later. There are multiple options. You get him for a playoff run and maybe you lose him. Maybe some teams are willing to protect him over someone else. Maybe a team is able to trade another player to make room as we saw some teams do this off season. There are multiple options. A team who wanted to make a run who risks losing him for nothing in a worse case scenario makes a lot more sense than a team who was clearly out of the playoffs and going nowhere. But sure tell yourself whatever you need to justify more terrible asset management.
