To me, the whole "playing your entire career for one team" thing is making a big deal out of nothing. I would rather the team care more about winning than anyone's feelings. Call it cut throat or whatever but the team should be looking to maximize asset value and doing what is best for the team. The Flames have historically held on to players for too long and lost them for nothing or next to nothing. Some people say that UFA's look at how a team treats its players when they're thinking about signing there and that's probably true. But if a team can maximize asset value and actually win, it probably looks even better.
Gio could have been traded to the rangers yesterday but it sounds like the team was trying to find a way to keep him instead of accepting that he was going to be lost regardless.
I really hope they look at moving players instead of letting them walk away for nothing.
